Eating low carb does not mean you have to give up the things you love, you just have to change your approach and make a few modifications. I LOVE cheeseburgers, probably the reason I'm having to do low carb now, but here is an easy way to get your cheeseburger fix. They taste great, and I've been eating low carb for about a month now. I really don't even miss the bread that much. What I do miss is adding as much seasoning as I want, seasonings have carbs. Can you believe that?
There are several low carb "breads" that you can make, but when first starting out in Keto I've found that it's much easier to just keep it simple. You can always branch out into bread substitutes later on. However if you NEED bread, and it may throw you off of your diet if you don't have some, check out a few of the low carb bread recipes on Pintrest. They have some really interesting ones there.
Here's what you'll need for the hamburgers:
- 1 pound of ground meat (73% lean 27% fat, more fat is better in keto)
- 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon of Cajun Seasoning such as Slap ya Mama
- 1 egg
And for the burger fixings you'll need:
- 4 large romaine lettuce leaves (washed and dried with a paper towel)
- 4 oz of pepper jack cheese, sliced (or any cheese you like with 1 carb or less per oz)
- 4 slices of cooked bacon
Take your ground meat and put it in a large bowl, add in the egg and measured seasonings. Mix well and form 4 hamburger patties.
In a large skillet, cook the hamburger patties until golden brown on each side, it should take 3 to 4 minutes per side.
About a minute before they're finished cooking, add 1 oz of the cheese to each burger and cover your skillet to melt the cheese.
While the burgers are cooking, lay out a large piece of romaine lettuce on each plate.
Place one burger on the bottom side of each lettuce leaf, leaving room to fold the other half of lettuce over the top of the burger.
Add your bacon to the burger then fold it over. I like to cut my bacon into 4ths before cooking, so I can pile it up in my burger. It makes me think I'm getting more bacon than I did.
Voila! Low carb burger! If you want to add any additional condiments just be aware of the carb counts. Ketchup is FULL of sugar, which is so disappointing. There is a low sugar ketchup by Heinz, but I haven't seen it in the stores around here. Also onions and tomatoes have carbs, so be aware of that as well.
